THE SHRINKING FINAL EDITION WITH FEATURES CUT

I have bought Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide since the early 1980s and have always enjoyed it. He has over 16,000 thoughtful reviews of many different movies and would go to a lot of trouble getting the title listing, year and running time correct. Unfortunately in the last few years he has cut features out of the book. One Amazon reviewer noted that the book is shrinking, this is true. The 2013 version has 1640 pages and the 2015 has only 1611 pages. The index of stars has been cut from this edition, they also had a index of directors which was cut years ago too, along with TV made movies. He is also cutting out any silent movies (movies released before 1927) from the 2015 edition. I am going to keep my 2013 edition on hand for the features that were cut in the 2015 edition. He seems to have a terrible phobia about letting the book get too big, he could easily divide a book with all of the features that we love into 2 parts and sell them in a sleeve.

After 46 years of publications, Maltin is announcing that this is his last edition. In the "Introduction to 2015 Edition", he starts out this section by stating "This is the final edition of Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide. There's no way to soften or defect that news, although I can't pretend that it comes as a shock. With ready access to information on the Internet, our readership has diminished at an alarming rate. The book's loyal followers know that we strive to offer something one can't easily find online: curated information that is accurate and user-friendly, along with our own reviews and ratings. But when a growing number of people believe that everything should be free, it's impossible to support a reference book that requires a staff of contributors and editors." It's a shame, internet and new technology claims another victim which is this book.

Leonard Maltin is one of the best and most respected movie critics out there today even though I disagree with his negative reviews of The Shining, Caddyshack, Blade Runner and Scarface. Even with the cuts, I will miss this great reference book, unfortunately this version goes out with a whimper.

Kindle version cannot touch the printed book for speed of finding a review...

While the content of the Kindle edition matches the excellent printed version the digital edition is too difficult to use in a practical way. Either you browse to the name of the movie in question by choosing the first letter of the title and then scrolling the pages one-by-one, or you may use the search feature which is incredibly slow. If Kindle had a useful indexing method the search method would be a fantastic way to jump to the review on wants, but as it exists the frustration of waiting for the results makes the Kindle version of Maltin's guide far from useful.

The authoritative reference for film buffs,

Fifteen years ago, when I bought my copy of Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide 2001," I did so because I needed a concise, clearly written, judicious, and authoritative reference book that would catalog and provide essential information about films from every historical era.

This year marks the 15th year in a row that I've bought a copy of "Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide". It became something of an annual ritual for me. Although "Leonard Maltin's 2015 Movie Guide" continued to evolve because of the ever-growing number of films it was required to evaluate, it still remains a wonderfully comprehensive reference book designed as much for occasional moviegoers as it is for hardened film addicts like myself.

Like its predecessors, the "Leonard Maltin's 2015 Movie Guide" is very simply and effectively organized. All entries are listed in alphabetical order. Each of the book's entries contains the following information: the movie's title; the year it was released; whether it's black-and-white or color; the film's length (in minutes); the director and cast; a short, sharp, informative review of the film; the film's rating (from BOMB to 4 stars, in half-star increments, as awarded by a consensus of Maltin's team of film critics); the aspect ratio in which the film was shot (e.g., Widescreen, Panavision, CinemaScope; etc.); the MPAA rating (G, PG-13, R, NC-17), and the various media in which the film is available (VHS, DVD, BD).

This latest edition of "Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide" concentrates on films released after 1965; films made prior to then are covered in a separate volume entitled "Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide."

Regretfully, "Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide" will no longer be published after 2015. Leonard Maltin announced this in his introduction to this year's edition. It's really too bad; with the guide, I've found it much easier to select the best films to rent or buy. It will be greatly missed.

A great starting point and reference for developing or updating range rules.

This e-book provides a great starting point, and is an excellent resource for the beginning range or club that is creating or updating their range rules and procedures.

Knowing that the author Alex Haddox has been involved in Marital Arts, shooting, and personal safety for a long time I was pleased to discover that he has published an e-book on developing standards and procedures for range operations. Although this tome may not interest the casual reader, anyone who is involved with the management of a shooting range can benefit from its contents.

The index is concise and complete, covering most topics that range cadre need to be aware of to run the range, keep people safe, handle basic situations and emergencies, and understand issues of potential liability. The e-book also helps you establish proper documentation practices to maintain the range manual as a living document.

Topics include emergency and evacuation plans, record keeping, and opening and closing of the range. These are all important themes to cover when establishing range policies. In addition, several basic sample forms are provided for general activities and emergencies.
I am the president of a shooting club with 50 members. Our club was just about to go through a process to update our standards and procedures, when I came across Alex's e-book and ordered it immediately.

The only reason I didn't award 5 stars was because it wasn't as complete and detailed as I would have hoped for my purposes. As I already have a set of range rules, I was looking for a tips on a better way to organize our existing manual, and more detail around range operations that I might not have considered or been aware of.

The e-book it is a good general overview. I would also like to see a paper version with the addition of more templates and forms to make the process of developing SOP's more turnkey. It is not easy to find information on this topic and I am glad to see that Alex Haddox has made available a concise manual to help with the process of developing or improving range procedures.

Great book, a very nice template to start with.. perhaps could be a bit more detailed, but then again, this could make it more difficult to comprehend..i wonder if a chapter on shotgun safety (for clays) would be a simple additional chapter..

i liked the novel for its historical connection to 16th century English history and its portrayal of martyrdom in that period. On the negative side, the novel is somewhat wordy by today's standards and at times seems overly melodramatic.

Riveting and Inspiring.

This is one of those books that keeps surprising you even though you know how it has to end.
The theological arguments are pretty simple but incredibly well phrased - I did lot of copy-paste, as I just had to save the way he worded a particular point or other. Obviously they center on Authority.
The characters are complex and the story is pure adventure start to finish.
RHB fast becoming a favorite author.
Good choice for anyone remotely interested in the English Martyrs. I think it is pretty historically accurate - I did a little research on several of the characters and it turns out many were real and accurately portrayed...at least according to Wiki.
bad choice for anyone looking for a reason to keep from being Catholic.

Robert Hugh Benson is simply an astounding writer (to say the least!)...and some other very well known writers (Chesterton, Knox, Sheen) were admirers of his work and took influence from him as well. This book, By What Authority?, is an easy yet profound work and I HIGHLY recommend anyone who may be interested in this topic, (or even if you somehow stumbled across this by accident!), to get it, read it, read it again, and then give it to someone else who will benefit from being enlightened by such a prolific author.

In Strangers to Ourselves: Discovering the Adaptive Unconscious, Wilson attempts to explain why there's so much about ourselves that we fail to understand, which can lead to misdirected anger. He points to a revised, post-Freudian understanding of how the mind works: the reason that their own judgments, feelings, [and] motives remain mysterious to people is not repression, as Freud argued, but efficiency so that the mind can process and analyze multiple things at once. A wise and trustworthy advice from a man who knew how easy is to deceive ourselves

Tim Wilson was my classmate at the University of Michigan. There are some people whom you know you can trust from the moment you meet them. Being with Tim had the refreshing quality of knowing there was not another person whom he pretended to be. He was the real thing. Plus he was bright but not pretentious.

Reading this book was as refreshing as being with him again. Nothing had changed, except that he knows a lot more about how easy it is to deceive ourselves. He transmits his wisdom, much more than his wide knowledge, in a clear and endearing way.

Great book, Kindle version very unsatisfactory.

The book is excellent. The Kindle version is VERY poorly done---a true half-assed job. The footnotes are not linked, so to see a footnote you have to:

a. Go to TOC
b. Go to Notes
c. Scroll to the note
d. The use < as needed to get back to where you were.

There are some missing words, but at least you can report those problems and perhaps they will be fixed.

The title is displayed ALL IN CAPS SO THAT IT STANDS OUT, especially compared to other book titles, which use Title Case.

I do wish publishes who create Kindle editions would have the work done by someone who knows what they're doing.

Fantastic Book!

This book is a must-read! The author wrote an incredible story that appeals to men and women alike. Every detail is thorough, the characters are well-developed, and it flows in such a way that makes it read very easily. Whether you enjoy it for the technical aspects surrounding the race car or WWII, or are drawn by the phenomenal story of love and family, you will not be disappointed by 'The Special'.

Great historical novel

I really enjoyed this book. I ordered the Kindle edition and after reading it, ordered the book for my husband. I was not expecting to enjoy the car parts of this book, but was drawn in despite my lack of knowledge about cars. Loved the war history and the beautiful love story.

This was an awesome book. It made you feel like you were right there in everything going on. A great love story, but not mushy. Great family story. Loved the details in the making of the Special. Anyone who loves to read, I would recommend it.

Necessary!

My mom told me she wanted me to read a chapter and the end of this book called "Envy" just because it was really good, etc. I couldn't just read the last chapter, so I started reading knowing that I definitely didn't have a problem with envy or jealousy because I'm just not like that. By the end of the first few pages, I was repenting to God for all the envy that I've harbored against my friends, family and fellow Christians! I even sought the forgiveness of a few people whom I felt that I had limited their ministry because of my envy.
EVERY Christian needs to read this book. I know that YOU don't have a problem with envy, but just buy this book anyways. You can read it and share it with your friends who are envious. ;-) This is definitely worth the money!

The everybody sin

I have never heard of or read Bob Sorge until now, but this book is well written and simple to understand. It was loaned to me by a friend and I was immediately taken by its straight forward attack of an insidious enemy.

Sorge's precepts are supported by biblical reference, the use of which is plentiful. I see something in Sorge's writing that I like very much. When scripture is brought into the chapter, he often brings clarity to its relevance through explanation and description, i.e., I am not expected to be a theologian to understand how the author wants to apply the information. There are several illustrations from his own life and he is transparent enough to allow for believability.

It seems to me that the book has broad application in humanity as each of us deals with envy. It deals with the Church in this, there are numerous references to the envy taking place between churchmen in each city or region. Whereas many areas are seeing "community building" taking place in their town others are still working to outdo their fellow pastor. Great strength comes to the church through unity of purpose under Christ!

Sorge makes a beautiful summary of what we'd be like minus envy when he says, "When we are rooted, grounded and perfected in love, our sense of identity in God is so profoundly fulfilled that nothing we see with the natural eye can produce an envious response within us. We wish for nothing that anyone else has because we already have everything there is to have- an extravagant, intimate relationship with the Lord of the universe" (pg 132,133).

The author from the begin identifies the enemy, and the enemy is within all of us - Envy. Sorge details how the enemy envy displays its self in human nature. He also uses life examples from his own experiences help the reader identify the enemy within their own lives. The author moves on to the next logical stage by laying out a battle plan for attacking and conquering envy.
A must read if you are serious about loving and serving Jesus and serving His body.

Excellent Book for the Microbiology Student

This book is a fantastic resource for the microbiology student. The plates are beautiful and the captions are fantastically detailed. Especially important and impressive is the background text and the plates that describe the metabolic pathways that the various tests and growth media exploit to bring about their results. This book is actually as much of a chemistry refresher as it is a microbiology textbook and lab book all in one. Seeing the chemical plates really makes you appreciate your chemistry courses again.

Also very important are the clear and concise test result tables and captions under the plates. These provide a simple and easy-to-understand means of interpreting the various tests that you will perform in your microbiology lab. In a sense, I could say that a textbook isn't really needed for a microbiology course. If your instructor provides good presentations in your lectures, all you really need is this product for your lab assignments.

I highly recommend this text both to professors and students.

A must have in the lab!

I was skeptical about purchasing this as it was only a suggested textbook for my Clinical Microbiology class, but it was definitely worth the few extra bucks. It is a great resource for all things micro! It has been very useful in studying for tests as it has great descriptions of different media, beautiful pictures, and is very well organized.

Great for school

This book is very helpful with my class as far as getting a better look at what we're studying. It also is very detailed in the pictures and the functions of the bacteria and other micro organisms. A lot of people in my class use this book as well.
