Gaslight mysteries from 2 free public domain books repackaged for sale as 1

It may seem like a good deal to get 30 gaslight-mystery short stories for only a buck -- and so it seemed to me. But when I downloaded a sample, the first story seemed awfully familiar. I had read it somewhere before. After doing some checking, I discovered I already owned it and all the other stories in this collection. That's because this book consists of 31 (not 30) entertaining old mysteries I had earlier obtained from the Kindle Store in two free public domain books: (1) CHRISTOPHER QUARLES: COLLEGE PROFESSOR AND MASTER DETECTIVE (1914), with 16 stories, and (2) THE MASTER DETECTIVE: BEING SOME FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS OF CHRISTOPHER QUARLES (1916), with 15 stories.
So while this Halcyon "bundle" costs a mere $.99, it really isn't such a very good deal -- UNLESS you prefer to have all 31 stories gathered in one ebook volume rather than in two and are willing to pay for that convenience. Be aware, however, that the TOC has some programming issues, like (on my Kindle Paperwhite) not taking me directly to a selected story, but to a reduced-text footnote-box instead; I then had to scroll down to the bottom of the box and tap "footnote" to get to the first normal, full-sized screen of the story. That is a nuisance. And paragraphs are distinguished by spacing rather than traditional indention (my personal preference). I actually prefer the formatting of the two freebies. For these reasons I deducted one star from this particular edition of stories I would otherwise have rated 4-stars.
The stories are old-fashioned in a comfortably quaint way and are pleasantly entertaining. In style, they are somewhat reminiscent of Doyle, by which I mean they are British, literate, and similarly descriptive (though Quarles is no Holmes, and his methods of detection are different in that they are less deductive and more psychological in nature). By downloading the free versions and giving them a try, you have nothing to lose if you decide they are not for you. But if you're a fan of old mysteries, you'll most likely really like them.
