Review
"If you have a copy of I Am That by Nisargadatta Maharaj on your shelf then this more than deserves a place next to it. The author spent 19 years in 'physical proximity' with his Guru and these talks have not been filtered through a translator as they were spoken in English.'Written by Selfless Self for Selfless Self'. Page after page, this book hits you straight between the eyes. It will - without doubt - become a 'Direct Way' classic." - Watkins Books, London.

Alan Jacobs President Ramana Maharshi Foundation UK "Ann Shaw has done truly remarkable work in editing this great spiritually encyclopaedic work recording the Teachings of the Self Realised Sage and Jnani, Sri Ramakant Maharaj, successor to the esteemed Jnani Nisargadatta Maharaj. In over 400 pages Sri Ramakant explores every aspect of the necessary Spiritual Practices or Sadhanas, which are needed for the ardent aspirant to achieve Self Realisation. In this important book questions are put to the Sage and then lucid answers are given which are precisely appropriate to the question. In this book the earnest aspirant will surely find the question and answer appropriate to his or her need. In reading the whole book he or she will find all that is essential for him or her to form their own synthesis, and proceed on their great journey towards Enlightenment. This is truly a great book and a worthy successor to the much celebrated 'I AM THAT', Talks given by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, Sri Ramakant's own Master." John Wheeler Author and Teacher of Non-Duality, California "The content is pure gold." About the Author
Ann Shaw's search began in the late 1960's and has continued throughout her life. At university in the UK, she studied Theology, Philosophy and Comparative Religion, Sanskrit, and specialized in Indian Philosophy and Religion. Over the decades, she practised meditation, Self-enquiry, contemplation and went on solitary retreats. She immersed herself in a wide variety of spiritual literature from east and west. This included the mystics, teachers and masters such as St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, Thomas Merton, Søren Kierkegaard, Patanjali, Ramana Maharshi, Paramahansa Yogananda, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Joel Goldsmith, Lao Tzu and Taoism, Rumi and Sufism, D. T. Suzuki and Zen, et al. Further on down the 'illusory' road, the teachings of Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj and Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj brought the search to an end. When she eventually visited Nisargadatta's disciple, Shri Ramakant Maharaj, she knew for certain, that she had reached the destination! A background in publishing and writing in various genres also prepared her for the task of compiling Selfless Self. The 'Spontaneous Direct Knowledge' flowing from Shri Ramakant Maharaj coupled with diligence and understanding on the part of the editor, have together produced a power-packed, spiritual classic. In her own words: "I was completely absorbed in the unfolding of this book and was guided throughout by both the living Master, Shri Ramakant Maharaj, and by (my) Inner Master - 'Selfless Self'. "This is an instruction manual through which the Master guides, pushes, and draws the reader towards Spontaneous Self-Realization. Selfless Self: Talks with Shri Ramakant Maharaj is the highest knowledgedelivered in plain, simple language. These pragmatic teachings are aided by a methodical presentation to enable the fullest absorption of Ultimate Truth".

Shri Ramakant Maharaj is a rare Self-Realized Master and direct disciple of Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj whose talks became the famous spiritual classic 'I Am That'. He was with the Master for nearly 20 years and teaches from a small ashram in Nashik, Maharashtra, India. Visitors from across the globe travel to sit in the presence of this English speaking Master. His Talks (Satangs) are simple, powerful, non-dual teachings that are hammered into the visitor. He freely shares the teachings and on occasion offers initiation into the lineage of his Masters via the Naam Mantra.

perhaps you are like the person I thought I was - an individual ...
By inoti
Okay. I have no idea how to write a review. So I'll just relay my experience. If you are reading this, perhaps you are like the person I thought I was - an individual body and mind. (A smile has appeared on my face as I type this. It's so funny to even think of this now.) Okay. So, randomly (or not) I was introduced to a video of Puppet Ji (I think that's the character's name). The video was entertaining and the ideas presented were attractive to me. I cannot remember exactly what happened, but somehow I ended up downloading I Am That.

I now see my life as divided into Before Nisargadatta (BN) and After Nisargadatta (AN). The first words I read of the Master were astonishing to me, to the person I was. I was exposed to religion early, being raised in a nominally Christian home. BN, I had gone through so many phases as an individual. I had fallen into and out of spirituality. Questioned. Rejected. Rinse. Repeat. I had read spiritual texts from many traditions, but I had never come across a more astounding message, or rather, I had never come across this ancient message expressed in such a clear and direct manner. I had also never had a reading experience like this. It was like reading the greatest mystery novel every written, but I couldn't remember any of it.

I read it voraciously, stunned by each sentence. I found myself re-reading the same statements time and again. Amazed. Stunned. Yet I couldn't remember anything. There didn't seem to be a need to remember anything. I had been exposed to this message (teachings) before but had never seen it presented in such a straightforward, clear and authoritative manner:

"Is it not important to you to know whether you are a mere body, or something else? Or, maybe nothing at all? Don’t you see that all your problems are your body’s problems -- food, clothing, shelter, family, friends, name, fame, security, survival -- all these lose their meaning the moment you realise that you may not be a mere body." - I Am That

Before I "met" Nisargadatta Maharaj, I was a person experiencing fantastic highs and tragic lows. I was often angry. I often felt anxious. I was interested in "my future." Ha. Honestly, this is the funniest thing in the world. How do we fall for this? It's all a con and we are the original con - the conman, the dupe and the con itself.

Okay. So the book. This book containing the teachings as relayed by Ramakant Maharaj is the last book I have purchased on the subject. After reading I Am That, I started reading SO MUCH stuff on Advaita Vedanta. I have so many books. I was trying to get out of the kindergarten level that my Master speaks of. And somewhere in Selfless Self, Ramakant Maharaj says something like, "Who's doing all of this reading?" And it just hit me: Okay. Enough. Enough with all of this study.

I have no idea what I am now. But I'm not concerned. Outwardly, my life hasn't gotten better since discovering Nisargadatta Maharaj. Most people would look at my daily life now and think it sucks compared to what I was doing BN. But somehow, things of this world have just become less interesting and less concerning. I don't know what happens. But if you are open to this message it will just work on you. From what I can tell it just works on you until the one who was looking, seeking, anxious, nervous, curious, .... just isn't there any longer. If you are open to this message, at some point you will feel nothing but profound gratitude for the messenger who introduced you to yourself. Everything I know is because of Nisargadatta Maharaj. His words have borne fruit in me.

So - what do you need to know?

Is this man, Ramakant Maharaj, the real deal?
Absolutely. Reading Selfless Self was like reading an extension of I Am That, with the Master explaining concepts in an even more crystallized form and not even bothering to engage in debate. How tremendous this is. When I first started reading Selfless Self, I found myself looking for flights to India. But, Ramakant Maharaj, like his guru, Nisargadatta Maharaj, doesn't let you off the hook. (My body has duties to attend to. They are not always pleasant. I could have justified going to India because it would be to see my Master incarnate. But, I knew I was only trying to get out of something. My master did not neglect his worldly duties.) But, what a blessing to have the Master in the form of Ramakant Maharaj, a man who spent so much time with Nisargadatta. It's wonderful. I love watching his videos on Youtube. What patience these men have to deliver this message to us.

What about the book itself? Excellent. Nice size. Good quality. Great editorial decisions. I appreciate the font choices.

Should you buy the book? Only if you are sincerely interested in discovering your true nature.

Nisargadatta said: "As long as you don't have the understanding of what you are, all the efforts and trouble are inevitable: they are automatically there. But once you get an inkling of what it is that you really are, there is no need for any effort, or for any trouble to arise. In earlier stages, there is self-love, but that love is formless. In the later stages, even that self-love goes. Then witnessing occurs of the self-love being absent. I am describing my state; it is something like a hollow stick, a hollow tube. No self-love being present, the love for existence has vanished; yet existence is there and activities are taking place. Like Brahma, Vishnu, or Iswara, I have not taken any pose or stance, because there is no material to support it." - The Ultimate Medicine (Robert Powell)

I no nothing except what I have learned from Nisargadatta Maharaj. How wonderful to be alive when his successor opens his doors to seekers. If you are open to this message you will reach a point at which you will weep with gratitude.

PS: Apart from I Am That and Selfless Self, the following books had a profound effect on me.

1) Every book and PDF file I could find of Nisargadatta's recorded dialogues. Every sentence Nisargadatta uttered is a gem. When I have been really struggling (inner rebellion) - I have always found whatever message I need to get me through.

2) Shri Sadguru Siddharameshwar Maharaj's Master Key to Self Realization - Reading the words of Nisargadatta's guru is an amazing experience.

3) Dasbodh - Siddharameshwar Maharaj gave lectures on excerpts from Dasbodh. It is an incredible book. Unbelievable. For a mature young person, I would recommend reading this book instead of (or before) going to college.

4) Bhagavad Gita - to be read as Nisargadatta instructed

5) Venkatesananda's Vasisthas Yoga - Wow. What a trip. It's like getting lost in a forest and loving it.

Okay. That is all.

Peace

Selfless Self - A True Seeker's Treasure
By J. D.
Often, nice books appear, good books, with great stories, thrilling, moving, brilliantly written, with inventive and surprising story twists. Often beautifully informative books are published, books which are critical of the social structure, highly esteemed and welcome. But rarely, very rarely, a book is published that is really necessary. A book that gives a unique and precious opportunity to probe deeply within ourselves. Not to acquire ordinary knowledge, but to acquire True Self-Knowledge, a profound Insight into our True Nature. A book that liberates us from our fears and worries, so that we arrive at true relaxation and well-being. In short, a book that is more than a book, guiding you towards Self-Realisation, Enlightenment, enabling you to tap into the Source of Divine Happiness within, which is rightfully yours.

Such a book comes quietly and surprisingly and is a rare and unique happening. As quietly as this book comes, as forcefully it will breach the Illusion in which we are submerged, by which the full glory of the Divine light of Bliss will be able to engulf you. This book, 'Selfless Self' of Ramakant Maharaj (disciple of Nisargadatta Maharaj) is very much the logical continuation of 'I Am That' and of 'Master of Self-Realisation', both timeless spiritual classics which for a long time now have been cherished by True seekers around the world.

By Alan Jacobs
Ann Shaw has done truly remarkable work in editing this great spiritually encyclopaedic work recording the Teachings of the Self Realised Sage and Jnani, Shri Ramakant Maharaj, successor to the esteemed Jnani Niagadatta Maharaj. In over 500 pages Sri Ramakant explores every aspect of the necessarfy Spiritual Practices or Sadhanas, which are needed for the ardent aspirant to achieve Self Realisation. This is truly a great book and a worthy successor to the much celebrated 'I AM THAT' written by Shri Ramakant's own Master, Shri Nisargatta Maharaj.
