It has been an educational read and I'm glad that I grabbed it when I did

I am not that familiar with Linux but this book has been more than an enlightenment for me. It has been an educational read and I'm glad that I grabbed it when I did. The book has explained stuff about this operating system that, of course, I wasn't aware of before. The Basic Linux commands has been a thorough one too, and the more than 25 tips and tricks to enhance my experience with it are just awesome. So, overall, this has been a good read.

This book was written with the intention of being used by those who have very little to no experience in the Linux ecosystem and has the potential to change your life and give a boost to a new career.
For any system administrator, working with Linux is very easy, as close to “set it and forget it”, because when one service requires restarting, reconfiguring, upgrading, etc, the rest of the server won’t be affected. Reading this book and implementing what you learn, you can be a proficient Linux user. Each chapter is assigned to an important aspect of Linux. Good read! This is a really good beginner's guide and you can master Linux in no time today!

I found the book very helpful and straightforward. The examples given are very simple, clear and consistent throughout the book. The language is clear and easy to understand. It gives very clear and very good information for beginners, making it extremely easy to learn from the book. Would recommend this book to anyone willing to learn anything about Linux!

Not Just for Stanhope Fans

As his fans already know, Doug's a stellar storyteller. He has managed to fashion one of the sweetest tributes ever written without using a single molecule of sentiment. If you're looking for someone to learn ya some grammar or explain the difference between "uninterested" and "disinterested," move along. (Johnny Depp's no Hunter S. Thompson, too.) But if you want to be blindsided by exemplary tales of a man who lives by a code (a twisted code but an internally consistent and admirable one), this is the book. Yeah. I'm talking about principles. Thoughtful readers will have a hard time finishing the book without taking a close look at their own lives and asking if they're really behaving in ways that are consistent with their own principles. I wouldn't be surprised if the work inspires a few midlife crises that include a road trip to Bisbee. If you've got friends who have lost someone dear, slipping this under the Hanukah Bush would likely save them the price of a dozen psychotherapy sessions. It's a moving book that I hope reaches a lot of people.

Exactly what you would expect

Just finished it in one sitting. It was vulgar, disturbing, profane, profound, thought provoking, and generally unbelievable, unless you possess a previous familiarity with the lifestyle proclivities of the author. Then, you know every word was the gospel truth, at least as much as a lifelong illicit drug and alcohol addled brain can be trusted. Stanhope's story, as is his life and career, is brutal and brilliant, sad and sagacious, a double edged sword of pathos and, well, pathos, but as he has always taught anyone who got past the drunken exterior, there is genius in madness and eternal truths to be found in the detritus of life, if you are just willing to scrape the layer of s*** off the top. In conclusion, I feel the same way about this book as I have always described the man himself. Stanhope is certainly not for everyone, but he should be. I own thousands of books. When I finished this one, I placed it on a shelf next to my copy of George Carlin's autobiography. I think the 2 of them will get along just fine.

Funny, but beautiful, touching and well written too!

It turns out Doug is a great writer too! There are moments of hilarity that catch you off guard. He knows how to set up a thought and deliver the punch line! That makes them seem even funnier, especially when tackling such a typically dark subject. Not only does Stanhope provide his unique insights into this subject, he offers some beautiful poignant thoughts that may help others through a potentially devastating emotional experience.

We get some insight into his upbringing and the unusually yet touching relationship between him and his mother.

As one comedian said, "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss ten bucks goodbye!" It's WORTH it! Highly recommended!

In an accessible and often humorous manner, Waring offers an explanation of the current economic systems of accounting and thoroughly outlines ways to ensure that the significance of the environment and the labour contributions of women receive the recognition they deserve.

A transformational assessment

Waring's work on the place and valuation of women and care in economic theory and practice is an invaluable read for those wishing to understand how ostensibly neutral economic logic makes inevitable normative claims. Moreover, in assessing these normative claims, Waring is insightful and unafraid to follow them through to their logical (perhaps, more aptly illogical) conclusion.

While arguably not the most accessible of texts, this book is not intentionally obscurantist. It is definitely worth a look for those wishing to critically consider the interaction between normative claims and economics.

About the Author
Jackson J. Spielvogel is Associate Professor Emeritus of History at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as Moreana, Journal of General Education, Catholic Historical Review, Archiv fur Reformationsgeschichte, and American Historical Review. He also has contributed chapters or articles to THE SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE REFORMATION, THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, the SIMON WIESENTHAL CENTER ANNUAL OF HOLOCAUST STUDIES, and UTOPIAN STUDIES. His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western Civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (7th Edition, 2014). He is the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (9th Edition, 2015), and the coauthor (with William Duiker) of WORLD HISTORY, first published in 1994 (8th Edition, 2016). Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. During the year 1988?1989, he held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award. In 1996, he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty member, and in 2000 received the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

An extremely well-wriiten history book

I have never posted a review on a text book even though I have ordered hundreds of them over the years; however, this particular book is written extremely well. Both of my youngest daughters are using it in their middle school social studies classes and when I placed the order, I assumed that this would be like the other history texts from the past - wordy and boring for tweens and young teens. Although the material spans centuries of early world history, it is well-written and concise and it conveys surprisingly detailed information in relatively few pages. Not only do I enjoy reading it, but my youngest daughter wants to read it in its entirety, too, this summer (her class will only cover one fifth to one quarter of the book at best). There is also a study guide that accompanies the book which we also purchased.

Good textbook for 7th graders

I'm using this book for homeschooling my 7th grade daughter. I like the way it is written and the information that's included in the book. My only criticism is that the chapters are short so I sometimes supplement with additional material. Overall, I think it's a great resource.
