Fracture mechanics has established itself as an important discipline of growing interest to those working to assess the safety, reliability and service life of engineering structures and materials. About the Author

After studying physics at the University of Magdeburg, Prof. Dr. Meinhard Kuna worked as researcher and group leader at the Academy of Sciences of GDR (Institute of Solid State Physics and Electron Microscopy) in Halle. At the university of Halle he graduated with PhD Thesis (1978) and habilitation (1991) in the field of numerical methods in fracture mechanics. After German reunification, he became head of department at Fraunhofer institute for Mechanics of Materials Freiburg/Halle and later at MPA Stuttgart. Since 1997 he is full Professor for Applied Mechanics and Solid Mechanics at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
Prof. Kuna established an internationally recognized research group dealing with computational methods in fracture mechanics, damage mechanics and modelling of materials. His projects are devoted both to fundamental research and industrial applications, ranging from nuclear waste casks, piezoelectric materials to microelectronic devices.

Prof. Kuna published about 240 papers and one monograph. He organized several national and international scientific conferences on fracture mechanics and is member of Editorial Boards in international journals.

Gr 6-9-After a dramatic opening that describes how prisoners were transported to Auschwitz by the thousands, Cefrey details how they were greeted by Mengele, who decided who was to die at once and who would be allowed to live as a slave laborer for a while. Mengele studied medicine and became a doctor, but was more interested in the study of genetics and Darwin's theories of natural selection. This background, plus his inability to continue active military service after being injured and decorated several times, led to his appointment at Auschwitz. Established medical institutions encouraged his "experiments" at that camp and collaborated with him. The bulk of the book describes the man's erratic personality, his experiments, and the suffering of his subjects, especially twins. What makes Cefrey's book so interesting is that she spells out Germany's nationalistic aims clearly and more succinctly than most adult books on the subject. She reports that the German population, already nourished on nationalistic folklore of a superior "German volk," was just waiting for a charismatic leader to lead them back to the glory they felt their country deserved. Black-and-white photos, some of which are reproduced better than others, are scattered throughout.

Interesting

This book does a good job of providing a 'very short introduction' to the study of genius. The book is well researched and well written, with plenty of interesting information. I didn't come away from the book feeling like I gained any profound insights, but here's my summary of key points from the book:

* A useful definition of genius is 'demonstration of exceptional creativity, whether inherited or acquired (or both)'. What counts as 'exceptional' is somewhat vague.

* There's not a lot of evidence for inherited talent, and even less for inherited genius.

* Intelligence (IQ) and creativity have a modest correlation up to an IQ of about 120, but not much correlation at IQs above that. Nearly all geniuses have an IQ of at least 120, but much higher IQs are neither a necessary or sufficient condition for genius.

* Highly creative individuals tend to come most commonly from very deprived and challenging childhoods, less commonly from very supportive childhoods, and least commonly from the vast middle ground.

* Solitude, both during childhood and adulthood, tends to play a large role in manifestation of genius.

* Geniuses tend to be substantially self-taught.

* There's modest correlation between 'mental illness' and creativity, but more in the arts than sciences, and especially among poets.

* Creative people tend to have complex and multifaceted personalities which they can manifest and adapt to suit context.

* Long-term commitment to chosen area(s) of interest tends to be a major factor in genius and high achievement in general. Creative breakthroughs are usually preceded by a long and prolific period of effort, perhaps on the order of a decade, rather than simply being 'eureka' experiences.

As the title suggests this is a short book of just 135 pages in the series entitled ‘A Very Short Introduction’. The book contains some pages of advertisements for the large number of books in the same series, a list of illustrations (15, all black and white), a page of acknowledgements, ten chapters, some suggestions for further reading and an index. The ten chapters are:
1. Defining genius
2. Family affairs
3. The schooling of genius
4. Intelligence and creativity
5. Genius and madness
6. Chameleon personalities
7. Arts versus sciences
8. Eureka experiences
9. Perspiration and inspiration
10. Genius and us
Andrew Robinson has had considerable experience in writing biographies about people usually considered to be geniuses including Satyajit Ray, Albert Einstein, Rabindranath Tagore and Thomas Young. In the first chapter the author set himself the task of defining genius, but does not completely succeed in doing so by the end of the chapter or indeed by the end of the book. Chapter by chapter, Robinson tightens up the definition so that in the final chapter genius is seen as a combination of talent and usually ten years of hard work to produce some remarkable achievement. But words fail, and some geniuses have virtually universal recognition, whilst the genius of other talented persons is disputed. The information provided in the book is interesting with some portions being memorable, particularly for me the childhood achievements of Francis Galton (pp. 47-48).

The task the author set himself was a hard one, and he made the journey worthwhile but the definition of genius remains incomplete.

an accessible, unbiased, and comprehensive introduction

Despite being limited to 126 pages (after all, this title is part of the Very Short Introduction series, from Oxford University Press), this books succeeds largely in discussing geniality in an engaging, accessible, unbiased, and relatively comprehensive way.

Though being dedicated to the definition of geniality, the first chapter concludes that this is an extremely difficult concept. Broadly speaking, I would say genius is a superlative of intelligence and/or creativity, but then, as discussed in the book, these two concepts are also difficult to be defined, and the "and/or" also reflects additional complications in defining genius.

Robinson's book then goes on to explore geniality from several relevant points of view, including family, education, intelligence and creativity, madness, complex personalities, arts, science, perspiration, and society. Most of the discussion is founded on scientific research, and many interesting trends are presented and discussed. For instance, a significant percentage of geniuses lost at least of their parents at an early age. Geniuses also tend not to acknowledge any benefit from traditional education. Scientific geniuses would also be more interested in arts than vice-versa. One of the most conclusive hallmarks of geniality is found to be perspiration, and I was surprised to know about the 10 years rule. In other words, genius tend to succeed largely as a consequence of long term determination and perseveration. This ought to be a particularly important lesson given the superficiality and short-term trends in our world. I also found the separation o between science and arts particularly welcomed, for there seem to be some important features in geniality intrinsic to these two cases.

One point that could have been more deeply explored regards the mechanisms through which geniality is recognized. In fact, several geniuses, such as van Gogh and Ramanujan, nearly escaped being totally ignored. In addition, as the book correctly points out, several discoveries are not completely original, in the sense of being presented previously by other people. Given that geniality is related to public awareness, one wonders how many genius have been unrecognized, or did not have a chance to develop as a consequence of being born in the wrong place or at a wrong time. A more in-depth discussion of how relevant works are acknowledged and disseminated would be very timely given the major changes implied by the Internet. In conclusion, I believe Robinson's book provides an extremely good introduction to the all important phenomenon of genius, who after all, are such benefactors of humankind and society. Highly recommended.

Learning your Jewish roots!

I'm a big Kay Arthur fan and love her studies. I've read parts of the first five books of the Bible, but when I saw this book I knew I had to have it. It took me about a year to complete this study, but by the time I finished I had developed such a tremendous respect for our Jewish roots. I think every Christian should be familiar with these five books. And through the use of this book, I feel like I've come to understand so much more about Jesus and His teachings.

Would Like More Detail

It is really hard to find self study books on Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, so from that perspective the book the great. However, I was using the "LifeChange" series for Genesis and Exodus and really liked that format better. The questions in LifeChange provoke more thought regarding the readings. The book by Kay Arthur doesnt provide as many thought provoking questions. I intend to use her books for the bible books not covered by LifeChange, but will probably go back to LifeChance when they cover a particular bible book.

Excellent study guide

I'm learning a whole lot from this study guide. Having the matching Bible helps, as does some familiarity with Kay Arthur's method, but she guides you through it in the text. There's lots of questions and keywords to help me focus and engage with the text more fully. Study helps and resources are also good, though only after you've read the text for yourself first. However, it's rather easy to read a passage too narrowly and miss all kinds of meaning, and the study guide doesn't really give me a lot to help prevent this. My only complaint is that I don't agree with some of her doctrine, and she sometimes uses leading questions to imply that what she believes is what the Bible teaches. But since the idea is to "discover for yourself," it's easy enough to disagree with her. Overall, a really good Bible study, though not for people unfamiliar with the Bible.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Michael VanRooyen is a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. He is the founder of the Humanitarian Academy at Harvard, an educational program advancing humanitarian professionalism in the field of medicine. He is the author of the textbook Emergent Field Medicine, and has been published in over 70 publications on the topic of international emergency medicine and humanitarian assistance.

Dr. VanRooyen has served as an emergency physician in over thirty countries, including Rwanda, North Korea, Iraq, Darfur-Sudan, Somalia, Bosnia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has advised as a relief expert for Oxfam, Physicians for Human Rights, Save the Children, and many other non-governmental organizations, and served as policy advisor to UN OCHA and the World Health Organization. He has consulted as a physician with NASA, the US Secret Service, and the US Public Health Service.

John Hanc is the author of eleven books, including The Coolest Race on Earth, an award-winning memoir about his experience running the Antarctic Marathon; and Not Dead Yet, the autobiography of Type-1 diabetic bike racer Phil Southerland. He is a frequent contributor to many publications including Newsday, The New York Times, and Smithsonian. He is also a professor of journalism and communications at the New York Institute of Technology.

Not Really

This is well written, but very vague. Tells more about the Boston bombing than anything else. Goes into great detail on personality traits needed to be a good emergency doctor. Save your buck and put it towards a longer more in depth book.

Not as gripping as I'd hoped.

It's a lot shorter than I was expecting it to be at 33 pages. And I know that's my fault for not reading that in the description, but I was shocked to discover after a few minutes that I was already a quarter of the way through the book. I was hoping we'd hear more stories of patients they'd seen and experiences they'd had, but instead it was more of a brief "This is why I became an ER doc" storyline. It's good in what it tells us and is well written and edited, but I was just hoping there would be more there. Having read "The Making of a Surgeon" by William Nolen, "Children's Hospital" and "Nurse" both by Peggy Anderson, I was expecting this to be something similar, but this is a much more condensed, basic discussion that seems to focus too much on the personality traits of what makes a good ER doc and not as much on the experiences and training. There should be a lot more there.

Short, shallow, and unorganized

Five chapters, one worthwhile (chapter two, "One Doc's Journey to the ED"), one bordeline (on the Boston bombing), and three fillers. That is a lot of filler for a very short book. No theme connects the chapters, either.

About the Author

Dr. John R. Walker, DBA, FMP, CHA, is the McKibbon Professor of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of South Florida and a Fulbright Senior Specialist. John’s years of industry experience began with management training at the Savoy Hotel London. This was followed by terms as food and beverage manager, assistant room’s division manager, catering manager, and general manager with Grand Metropolitan Hotels, Selsdon Park Hotel, Rank Hotels, Inter-Continental Hotels, and the Coral Reef Resort, Barbados, West Indies.

 

John has taught at two- and four-year schools in Canada and the United States. In addition to being a hospitality management consultant and text author, he has been published in The Cornell Hotel Restaurant Administration Quarterly, The Hospitality Educators Journal,and the New York Times. He is a 10-time recipient of the President’s Award for teaching, scholarship, and service, and he has received the Patnubay Award for exemplary professional performance through teaching and authorship of tourism and hospitality publications.

 

John is an editorial advisory board member for Progress in Tourism and Hospitality Research. He is a past president of the Pacific Chapter of the Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (CHRIE). He is a certified hotel administrator (CHA) and a certified foodservice management professional (FMP).

 

John is married to Josielyn T. Walker, and they have twins, Christopher and Selina. The Walkers live in Sarasota, Florida.
