Eye-opening, life-saving, most enjoyable read.

For the purpose of this review, I thought it's important to give some of my background. I'm a 24-year-old medical student and I'm a practising Muslim, having learned Islamic studies ever since I was little up till I was 19, so I have extensive knowledge about it. I have always been inquisitive and questioning by nature, and I brought these into the realm of my Islamic studies to further understand Islam, much to the discomfort of other students ("common Muslims" are discouraged from having "obviously questioning" discussions as they are deemed to have inadequate scholarly knowledge). After years of study (including comparing other faiths), even though I was brought up as a Muslim, I believed in Islam on my own accord. I realised my same-sex attraction ever since I was about 9, but I thought I was attracted to females as well, so I concluded I was a bisexual some years later. I have been taught that homosexuality has no place in Islam, but it didn't bother me as much as I thought I could always settle with a girl. Late 2009, after further reflection and exploration, I concluded that I was actually gay, not having any sexual attraction toward females. This epiphany brought intense internal conflict - a battle between my religion and my sexuality. I desperately searched for answers.

Scott Kugle is the first Muslim to publish widely on the issue of homosexuality and transgender identity in Islam. Like some gay Muslim advocates, I expected a very emotionally-driven writing to defend queers when I bought this book. Instead, I was delightfully surprised by his neutral-sounding, critical and objective writing, reflecting years of careful research and synthesis of valid ideas. This book is divided into systematic sections, bringing readers into natural progression across his arguments. His introductory chapter is a wonderful summary of his whole book, telling readers what to expect in this book. He begins soon with discussion into the nature of human sexuality (including inherent nature of homosexuality) as a basis for his argument throughout the rest of the book.

The next chapter is all about the Qur'an's stand on the issue of homosexuality. It's about liberating the Qur'an from shackles of previous traditional/classical (mis)interpretation of this issue, which I had come to accept as an absolute "fact" from my years of study. The arguments are laid out logically and coherently, free from "twisting of the fact" as accused by the majority of Islamic authorities. This chapter changed my view of the scholars' interpretation of the Qur'an as almost infallible. A very eye-opening section of the book.

The following chapter talks about the hadith (Prophet Muhammad's sayings). In desperation to make syaria laws and rulings, jurists have used weak and (highly possibly) false/fabricated hadiths to justify condemnation of homosexuality and punishments for homosexual acts. Throughout my Islamic studies, I have surprisingly discovered many weak or fabricated hadiths that the "common Muslims" have accepted to be truth, so this chapter of the book serves to reinforce my discovery. Another eye-opening chapter if you aren't familiar with the studies of hadiths.

Next comes the chapter on assessing fiqh (Islamic legal reasoning). It focuses on the legal standing of homosexuality and male-male anal intercourse, some female-female relations. This chapter and the next chapter is tightly linked, as the idea to legalise homosexual relationships (in the eyes of God) via marriage (nikah) is explored, which requires critical reassessment of the current (patriarchal) idea of nikah between man and woman. This chapter provides solutions to the "problem" of homosexual relationships, and I commend the author for providing solutions too instead of simply presenting his arguments for homosexuality. The last chapter before the conclusion presents points for transgender individuals, which is also a great read.

Overall, this book is simply a superb buy, and in retrospect, I would have gladly paid even more for the quality of writing that I receive from this book. Who do I recommend it too? Well, of course for LGBTIQ Muslims this book is a must-read. I'd also recommend all Islamic teachers, imams, scholars, and authorities to give this book a read and please do so with an open and neutral mind, as I have forced myself to do (due to my classical/traditional Islamic understanding). For LGBTIQ Muslims, I would also recommend borrowing/buying this book for your Muslim friends and family members who might have trouble understanding our position. I also think that non-Muslims can benefit from this book, to help them understand that Islam is accommodating to queers. Basically, "Homosexuality in Islam" deserves a place in everyone's bookshelf.

It has helped me to reconcile with my religion and sexuality. Scott Kugle has probably saved my life from one of constant internal conflict and depression with his writing. What are you waiting for? Now go buy this book!

An academic must.

These concepts shared in this book are nothing short of brilliant. Without ever having to refute or deny any words of the Qur'an itself, Siraj brings forth a truly educated, thorough, and refreshing alternative perspective to what many educated individuals (Muslim or otherwise) see as rigid and disingenuous interpretation of the faith (ie conservative straight males perspective ONLY). It is these 21st century ideas that can help bridge the divide among Islam in other cultures, should they choose to do so. Siraj talks about people and the purpose of faith and defies the taboo without apology a without undermining the faith.

The naysayers are all the same. The same things they said about Fatima Mernissi and anyone else who challenges the old patriarchal ways about anything.

On a personal note, this book not only changed my entire perspective of Islam (for the better no less), but helped me write one of the best academic research papers I think I have written. It is a must read for anyone interested in this very complex subject.

An excellent companion to Eckhoff

John Barton has written a very worthwhile reference book on dust explosions. It is not a book to replace Rolf Eckhoff's "Dust Explosions in the Process Industries", rather, it is a companion. Dust explosions are complex and those of us who work in the field would agree that there is much about them that is not well understood. Barton has given the subject a new look and particularly for those of us in the USA, a useful insight into the logic and approach of our European colleagues. The logic diagrams alone are worth the price of the book. There is more meat in his treatment of suppression systems than I have seen anywhere else in print. The discussion of vent sizing is excellent and I happen to agree with Barton that the FMRC model has advantages over the others and should be more widely avialable. In addition to vent sizing there is also a very useful discussion of related supplementary design considerations. Barton also covers propagation between linked vessels in a very thorough manner. The illustrations are clear, the photos support the text well and are very useful. The book is well organized, well researched, and easy to use. Highly recommended.

Terribly disappointing.

I really wanted to like this book, but there are some things that just can't be ignored:

1) Perspective changes WAAAAAAY too much. In one chapter, the perspective (and point-of-view) changed 21 times. Sometimes you're with this character, sometimes with that character, and then a 3rd, 4th, and 5th character. Sometimes you're in first person, sometimes you're in 3rd person.

Connie, pick 1 or 2 characters to follow and a single point-of-view. The constant hopping is disorienting and breaks the flow of the story.

2) While I don't begrudge a female character having multiple lovers, what's going on with Quin is just silly. By the end of the book she has so many male consorts that I lost count of exactly how many there were. I THINK she was up to 8 or 9 at the end.

It's like every male character that happens to cross her path is instantly in love with her. Seriously, there are some characters that have been exposed to her for all of a couple days and they're referring to her as "my love." Too, NONE of them are upset with the fact that there's a basketball team worth of other guys lining up for her time.

To add to the ridiculousness, at the beginning of the book, Quin is thrown 5 years into the future. After 5 years, not a single one of her male harem sought to find another woman? Not even the 16 (now 21) year old kid? Really? None of them have so much as had sex with the girl, but they're going to put their lives on hold because they're so distraught?

3) There are character with god-like powers and 1000's of years of experience that are completely ineffectual and are utterly useless when it comes to making a plan. They have space ships that can be transported anywhere in the universe on a whim, but they can't get a spy satellite, a spy network, or long-range surveillance on various worlds? Their spies only observe a single city on a planet. Really?

4) Quin is a complete wuss. I'm all about a female character having some vulnerability. It's a pet peeve of mine how many writers have a young girl as the protagonist and make her supremely capable despite lacking experience and education. However, Quin is a blubbering, whiny, cry baby. She's constantly feinting, crying, crawling in laps for comfort, or looking for someone to cheer her up.

5) Everything revolves around Quin. It's annoying. Yes, she's supposed to be the main character, but all the supporting characters, including several royalty, are constantly looking out for her, comforting her, and generally being hyper-protective.

Not like the previous books.

I found it hard to like this last book. All of a sudden it's packed with more characters than you can keep track of and places you have to try to remember from prior chapters. It just got ridiculous. That and she takes pretty much every male character as her lover then gets upset when one of her lovers has to marry two others. I loved the first two books and was anxious for this. I little let down, honestly.

A Sequel for the Sake of a Longer Series. Pure Filler.

I give the first installment Finder 5 stars. 3-4 stars for the second installment Keeper. But this one is simply disappointing. In the first book, Quin or "Finder" is an impressive character in her own right, not absurdly powerful, and a complex character. She isn't defined by romantic relationships. The world building is also good in Book 1.

But the BLACKWING installment is even worse than the second. This book is pure filler. She has a ridiculous amount of lovers. I don't really care that she's not in a traditional relationship - it's just taking up too much space and feels "forced and fake and stupidly convenient." Her powers are always growing, but we don't get any answers to the mystery behind her creations. Only more and more assumptions and more questions. I forced myself to read the first half diligently, but I only skimmed the second half and read any parts that seemed relevant. Too disappointing.

More importantly than anything, this book does not feel connected to the first 2. There are simply way too many new characters, too many new worlds, too many this, too many that, etc etc. Characters are barely given enough page time, and too many are given their own POVs when we don't even care about them. How could we properly care about any of these characters when so many new ones are shoved it every few pages?? I have no attachment to them. Quin herself has regressed a lot. She's whiner and crybaby who suddenly needs to be consoled all the time. She faints or becomes overwhelmingly distressed very frequently.

So much of what made Finder such a great book is absent in this one. This is a common problem with many book series. However, where this series is WORSE than others is that it lacks a sense of "connected-ness." It just doesn't "feel" like it belongs with the other two.

This was a sequel for the sake of continuing the series. The real story begun (and somewhat continued in Book 2) does not feel like it's progressed at all. Readers will be led on, hoping to find answers only to be disappointed. Whatever the next installment focuses on, I won't bother to read it.

Hearing a call...

Hearing a call is a very difficult discernment process. Sometimes the call is clear, but the path is not. Sometimes the path is clear, but the desire is not. Gregg Levoy has done an exceptional job at being an in-print spiritual director for those seeking an entrance into the process of finding a true calling and a more authentic life.
What is right for me? and Where am I willing to be led? are the two essential questions -- Discernment requires that we ask these two questions continually and devotedly.
As Levoy says, 'people won't pursue their callings until the fear of doing so is finally exceeded by the pain of not doing so.' I have found this to be very true. It took a very long time to discern my call to the priesthood, and yet more time to decide that it is something I must do at all costs (and the costs have been heavy). Yet, I cannot imagine myself doing anything differently and being in any way fulfilled.
'The truest calls seem not only to keep coming back but also to make their way to us through many channels.'
Levoy integrates so much material here, from spiritual masters and the scriptural traditions of many religious faiths to modern psychology and artistic/cultural experts.
Perhaps the greatest chapter for me was that on 'Finding Clarity', in which Levoy says that 'there is such a thing as thinking too much about a calling.' As Emerson said, sometimes it is best to let the bird sing without trying to decipher the song. 'A calling is ultimately mysterious, and the process of discernment is always a bit of a guessing game.'
Levoy's guidance, in cooperation with others in my community, helped me to see a change of mindset, a change of events, a change of personalities were all converging to tell me something that I had closed my mind to, or, more accurately, had closed my heart to. So, I began to pray, even if only subconsciously, and the path began to materialise before my eyes.
'When I pray, coincidences start to happen. When I don't pray, they don't happen.' - William Temple
It also taught me that I couldn't wait for 'someday' -- how we spend our days is how we spend our lives, according to the apt observation of Annie Dillard.
And finally, it made me face what it was to keep saying no. There is a cost, and eventually God will get you anyway -- Jonah (remember Jonah and the great fish?) said no, but eventually had follow his call anyway. I learned that one source of my fear: 'One of the frightening prospects of saying yes to a calling is that you may find out who really supports you and who doesn't.'
Figuring out how to bring my call into being was the final task, and Levoy provided wisdom here as well. 'You cannot cross a chasm in two small jumps', he quoted Lloyd-George as saying; I was forced to create a response to my call, one that did not exist before.
Thus, not too long after discovering this book, I became Father Kurt, and I owe much to this book for that. But please, don't assume that it will tempt or trap you into a ministerial role--it is an excellent guide for discernment, and discernment is one of the most personal tasks for any human being. Prepare to be enlightened.

Good advice that can come from within

I'll have to admit that I'm a fairly big reader of self-help books. Many of the "to-do" lists in self-help books are useful, I found this book an internal to-do list. Instead of outward activities that many books ask you to partitipate in to make progress, this author advises looking to your most inner thoughts, your dreams, your conscience, in order to find what you really want out of life. It works. Listen to your quiet moments, pay more attention to your third sense and record the things that occur in your dreams. There is a direct relationship between all of these thoughts and the things that will make you happiest. Interesting thought in the book ... "What did you want to do when you were seven?" Think about it and the level of satisfaction you are getting our of life now.

This book is a calling!

This book is geared for anyone who is doing what life tells them to do..and still doesn't feel right. It reminds us to not ignore that subtle voice that will not leave us when we are not doing what the universe wants us to be doing. It reminds us that our intuition is there to help us find our path in life and that if we ignore the messages we will have a significant price to pay. Having been in the wrong career for 11 years, this book has inspired me to not only quit my job, but to follow that intuitive voice that has been hounding me for years. This book is perfect for anyone who "knows" that something needs to change in their life. I also will be throwing out a multitude of similar books that can't even touch the level of material in this book. Don't even hesitate to buy this one!! And no, I don't know the author and have never written a book review before.
