This short insight in to opening and running a successful real estate business, could easily be mistaken for a sales pitch for Paul Davies' real estate brand One Agency....however, if you stop and think about it who cares? If you want to take it for what the title says it is, then the book is successful in its mission and is a helpful guide to all aspirational Principals. If you want to see it as a pitch, that is great too...because the One Agency model has to be considered a very serious option when thinking of going out on your own.
Having been an agent for 20 years and finally taken the plunge in business ownership I can safely say I am glad I waited.
Paul has created an almost perfect model, and he is obviously very proud of what he has done. He is a caring and inspiring leader who wants his business owners to be successful - and he has written a book to prove it!
Good on you Paul and good luck to anyone going in to business for themselves - you will not regret that ONE big step!

The Amazon paperback version is not the full book.

This copy (produced by Amazon LLC) is not in fact the actual book by Nevil Shute, but a poor abridgement of it. It clocked in at 207 pages, 23 lines per page, versus 320 pages at 33 lines per page in my 1957 edition. It reads like the book condensed for English language learners. First line, second paragraph, has gone from "He woke happy, and it was some time before his conscious senses realized and pinned down the origin of this happiness," to "He woke happy, and was not sure why."

Amazon should be embarrassed to put out this product without labeling it for what it is.

This is one great book - it should be required reading in elementary, middle, and high school to give students a perspective on what uncontrolled aggression, combined with nuclear arms, can do to our world. Perhaps with the proper understanding of what can happen if renegade powers are allowed to develop nuclear weapons those renegades will be frustrated by rational people, with more than talk. It is simply a matter of making it clear to those who would be adversely affected by an irrational nuclear attack that it is foolish to weaken ourselves to the point of vulnerability. Our Citizens must be made aware of the consequences of "playing nice" with renegade powers and individuals. That doing so poses a dire threat to the whole world. This book is a perfect primer for the youth of our Country to help them come to an understanding of what's at stake if we become complacent about the issue and drop our guard.

I read this book 40 years ago, and it has always remained my answer to "What is your favorite book?" Since it had been so many years, I was having trouble remembering why the book has always been at top of my list of 'favorites'. So I bought it and read it again. I was reminded why it has been, and still is, my favorite book. Long before the apocalyptic world became such a popular genre, as it is now, Nevil Shute was able to capture the essence of what happens to folks when they know in their heart of hearts their time on earth is drawing to an end, but have such a hard time accepting that their plans to have a garden bloom next year are so senseless. Great book, simple story, that captivates the era, the eternal hope of human kind, the inevitable fate that awaits us all.

Learned a lot

I have had chickens for a number of years and ordered this book because i just ordered 7 new chicks. I hesitated about ordering it as i have had them before and was familiar with the process. This book is really great. It had things i never heard of and frankly i was very happy i ordered it. If you think you know everything that there is to know about chickens, order it anyway and you will be amazed at the things you did not know. I recommend it highly

I am a newbie to the whole chicken keeping thing and find myself constantly referring to this book to answer any number of questions I may have. I've got 5 gals - 3 Buffs and 2 Blue Americaunas. I have to say I love my Buffs. Anyway, if you are new to this whole business, buy this book, you won't regret it!

Earning my own "Success Scars"

Why would anyone want to read about another person's failings? Because "there is no success without failure."

Smiley speaks openly of his failings "very few achievers want to show off their warts by acknowledging mistakes," especially when they're shameful or embarrassing--and what could be more embarrassing than telling the world you went to jail because you bounced checks for pizza?--but this is exactly what Tavis Smiley does.

Lest you think he's bragging about his time spent locked up, you find instead that this was the fall that taught Smiley the value of money: where he learned not only diligence when it came to spending and saving but learning how to manage his finances. A lesson he learned so well that he was in a position to purchase the building in California where his media empire is located without getting a bank loan. Failing up from check kiting to financial independence.

Learning how to see perceived failures in a way that rebuilds you and helps you go back to the drawing board is an incredible gift.

In Fail Up not only did he print some really personal missteps he did it in a way that shows us how he took them and turned them around. Smiley mentions his well-known firing from BET. I remembered when he was let go, but I never knew the story behind it.

After reading this book, I located some pictures I'd thought I'd lost which had stayed lost for a long time and for a good reason. The pictures represented a time when a major failure seemed to consume my life. The pictures were the before, and I have been living the after. In those pictures, I could feel the embarrassment and humiliation that that time represented for me. But in reflecting on Smiley's words, rather than see the failure of that time I started to see the ways that I failed up. I could see the ways I and my family recovered and rebuilt ourselves and our lives and to see this situation as what it was--the welcome mat we needed to reach our goals.

Smiley's book spoke to me. When you're trying to make your way there are things that come up that can seem catastrophic, but to think of these fiascoes as the best thing that could ever happen makes all the difference. In the midst of wrack and ruin, there is a ray of hope if you can fail up.

While I have no intention of being a leader on the level of a Tavis Smiley, I'm definitely a leader in my own small way. Fail Up has become a refrain in my mind when dealing with those seemingly crushing situations and even the everyday day ones that may look like disaster on the surface.

Rather than failures I'm earning my "success scars." Rather than setbacks my own failings are "opportunities to grow."

This book reminds us that we all fall down. It's what you do afterward that counts. You can fail or you can let Tavis teach you how to fail up.

I found myself because I know myself

This book in total is witty and insightful and from the title I'll assume you got that. I have to tell you, Be Dignified Even When Justified resonates with me to my core. Growing up a slightly angry young man and with an insane sense of feeling I had to prove myself and demanding recognition, I was not always as tactful and 'dignified' as I should in corporate america. There was a moment I had to take the lesson from my grandfather and that lesson was no more underscored than reading this shared proverb from Mr. Smiley. When you let Mr. Larry King interview you on your PBS show, you said everyone would find themselves in this book and I can say for a moment I waived my hand and quipped "Yea, right." Like your haters, you proved me wrong. Keep the faith Mr. Smiley and keep pushing us through your example to live to our potential and not others expectations. Keep the Faith :-)

I never liked Tavis Smiley.....

I admit it---I never liked this guy---and this book is, at times, frustrating to read, obtuse in its arguments and polemical in its discourse---it is also candid, insightful and thought provoking--in short, it is brilliant. Kudos to Mr. Smiley for having the courage to write something like this at a time full of posers and sycophants.
