About the Author
C. L. Werner was a diseased servant of the Horned Rat long before his first story in Inferno! magazine. His Black Library credits include the Chaos Wastes books Palace of the Plague Lord and Blood for the Blood God, Mathias Thulmann: Witch Hunter, Runefang and the Brunner the Bounty Hunter trilogy. Currently living in the American south-west, he continues to write stories of mayhem and madness set in the Warhammer World.

The authors never fails to please.

Before our story even opens, Wulfrik the Warrior had been promised by King Viglundr of the Sarls the hand of Princess Hjordis, among other things, should he kill King Torgald. Wulfrik did the deed. However, he made the biggest mistake of his life when he uttered a drunken boast claiming himself to be the equal of any warrior in the mortal world or in the realm beyond flesh. That night, as he slept, the offended gods branded Wulfrik's skin with their signs, altered his human teeth to those of a wolf, and explained their curse.
Now Wulfrik receives visions in his dreams, a portent of things to come. They guide him to the offerings the gods demanded of him. The gods bestowed a blessing upon Wulfrik called the Gift of Tongues. By focusing his mind, he can understand the speech of any creature, no matter how strange. He can even speak the language back to them. Wulfrik cannot wed the princess he loves until his curse has been lifted.
King Viglundr has no intention of ever allowing Wulfrik to wed his daughter. The king plans for Hjordis to marry Sveinbjorn, the Aesling prince, and cement their alliance. Yet Wulfrik would not let anything hold him back from claiming Hjordis as his own. Not the cruelty of the gods and not the schemes of King Viglundr.

More than once I felt those cold fingers travel the length of my vertebrae. Wulfrik kept his men on their toes, and me on the edge of my seat, as he stormed across mystical seas upon a ship powered by his own blood. This stand-alone story will keep you captivated from the first page until the last. *****

Wulfrik is a Warhammer Fantasy novel by the master of this genre, C.L. Werner. It has been awhile since I have visited Warhammer Fantasy and Wulfrik definitely surprised the hell out of me. Yetis, Fire Dwarves, Hobgoblins, the lammasu, and the Treetroll, I had no idea the editors at Black Library were letting their authors branch out so far away from their usually safe medium. Few noteworthy tidbits worth mentioning least I forget: Wulfrik's Gift of Tongues; while originally I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this it turned out to be pretty sweet.
So let's row on into the plot shall we? Wulfrik is cursed by the Dark Chaos Gods, damned to wander for what may be eternity until he kills everything sent to him through the visions the gods provide him. This turns into somewhat of a quagmire for Wulfrik because the love of his life is stuck back in his home town, Ormskaro and his love Hjordis's father, King Viglundr is trying to marry her off to a rival prince. In the meantime a Kurgan shaman comes along with hefty promises to end Wulfrik's curse once and for all. Whether the shaman can make good on these claims or whether Wulfrik and his men can survive the trials and tribulations ahead of them is as good as anyone's guess.
As you can probably tell from the title, Wulfrik is the main character and really while some of the side characters are intriguing themselves (Jokull, the scout with a tentacle "...lash-like appendage growing from his shoulder..." and another reaver, Arngeirr, welding a kraken blade) I didn't really pay as much attention to any others and didn't feel a ton of connection. This is excluding some of the more major characters within this saga, Hjordis, The King Viglundr, the Aesling prince Sveinbjorn, and the mysterious Kurgan shaman, Zarnath.
The linear change in Wulfrik and a few others isn't so extreme that it jars the reader but nearing the end you might find it a bit shocking, until it settles in upon you that even though this is classified as a Warhammer Hero novel, Wulfrik is anything but a saint and will go to any lengths of the world to get his way.
I've heard a lot of people complain about the use of some magic ruining fantasy novels but the bits used by a varying assortment of unscrupulous creatures and fiends was crafted admirably. I loved the portrayal of the raven within this book and how it correlates with everything; you probably won't understand my meaning with this until you read the book.
The setting changed vastly due to the "Wandering" nature of Wulfrik and his enchanted ship "Seafang" and for me that was fantastic. One day you could be resting up and getting drunk in a mead hall at Ormskaro and the very next instant you might be battling the fire dwarves in the "Dronangkul" or "Fortress of Iron", or perhaps even elves from as far away as Ulthuan.
This was definitely an exciting read for me as Warhammer Fantasy is what originally hooked me on the fantastic worlds of Warhammer. I think Mr. Werner has been doing an excellent job in lighting the torch per say to hopefully grab some more attention to this greatly under-appreciated universe.

good, dark, entertaining read

Ok, so I'm working through the Warhammer Heroes series, and I'm trying to do it chronologically of when the books came out. I've read Sword of Justice before this one. I'd say this novel is an improvement upon Sword of Justice, particularly because of the subject matter, but it was only marginally better. There were less full scale battles in this one - which was good. The biggest difference is that this novel was much darker just because of the heavy Chaos influence here with Wulfrik himself and the Norscans in general. This is a good change of pace for me, as most of the Warhammer novels I've read so far have been from the stand point of the good guys in the Empire and not so much the Chaos side. I enjoyed Wulfrik's point of view, and although the end was a bit predictable, it was still a good ride getting there. The book started out a bit slow for me - maybe in part because of the way author CL Werner chose to jump around in time a bit at the beginning of the book - but it quickly picked up, and from then on it was full steam ahead. There were few characters that were fully fleshed out, but that's because so many of them bit the dust! Good action in this one. I'd recommend this book to any fan of Chaos, or of Warhammer in general. Good book!
