Well worth the wait

I pre-ordered this book back in late January and it took about 6 weeks for me to get it in the mail. I was extremely delighted to find out that it comes with a wonderful compilation of all the main La La Land movie soundtracks arrangement of each pieces. Each song comes with the piano scores, vocal, chords, and lyrics. The piano arrangement resembles the original soundtracks and are well suited for the advanced beginners and intermediate pianists. I cannot keep my hands off the piano playing all these wonderful pieces. For those who are looking for piano solo arrangements, there are only four pieces which are mainly arranged as piano solos (Mia & Sebastian's theme, Planetarium, Engagement Party, and Epilogue). The piano part for the rest of the pieces are arranged as accompaniment for the vocal instead.

Something for Everyone

Impro: Improvisation And The Theatre is a surprisingly helpful book by Keith Johnston. After a brief introduction and some autobiographical information, it dives right in to Improv instruction. I say instruction, because Keith Johnstone wrote this book from the point of view of an instructor, but it really can be helpful for students, actors, writers, and people who want to be more creative in general.

Eye-opening book, goes beyond theater

Keith Johnstone has a very interesting worldview. This book is clearly aimed at people who want to either learn about improvisational theater, or even moreso people who want to teach it. There are a few explicit exercises, but the text is mostly prose about the nature of improvisation, and the way that relates to human psychology.

As an example of an interesting psychological insight, Johnstone discusses trance states. He strongly recommends using theatrical masks for improvisation, and his method for using them—though he references many earlier teachers with the same idea—involves using mirrors and skillful encouragement in order to take the student out of their normative self and get them to really experience being something else. But we are in fact always going in and out of trance states, he explains: it's impossible to always be "in control," and attempting that just leads to frustration and anxiety.

Another basic point is that imagination is a kind of natural state of the human mind. At one point he says explicitly that imagination is the "true self," which is if nothing else a fascinating hypothesis. His take on school education recalls other writers, especially John Holt, whom he cites several times: basically, modern education tends to discourage spontaneity and imagination.

Finally, his structural way of seeing theater, comedy, and human interaction in general, involves "status games," which makes a lot of sense. For example, he loves Beckett's way of playing with master-servant dynamics, one-upping, etc. He describes a method of teaching theater that involves getting people to understand their own habits of "status posturing," in order to assume other positions and act naturally. He says that long spontaneous improvisation sessions can grow out of just a simple configuration of status, and gives examples of such games.

Johnstone's outlook reminds me of life's strange beauty. Life is indeed much like improvisational theater, and it's great to learn from the insights of someone whose life work involves taking this seriously.

Meaningful stuff, makes you think.

This was the first improv book that I ever read, and in retrospect I kind of wish I'd read something like Charna Halpern's TRUTH IN COMEDY or Mick Napier's IMPROVISE first. Those books will give you a better introduction to what most of us know of as group improvisation - the "Whose Line is it anyway" sort of thing. They'll give you a better framework to work with.

Keith Johnstone's book, on the other hand, is kind of like a complete rethinking of the Improv framework ... he writes about things I haven't read about anywhere else. And it really made me think about things in a different way.

First of all, I have to admit that the first couple of sections are pretty dry. I had to struggle to get through the section on "Status" ... I was thinking to myself, why did people give this BORING book a good review?? ... I did consider that maybe it's because the man is British (I think), and so the style of writing and the type of humor is a little different than I'm used to.

However, when he gets around to talking about the story/narrative, suddenly there is a flash of brilliance and it all started to make sense ... basically he talks about just letting GO of the things that are inhibiting us, how to stop listening to the voice that is telling us NO all the time ... and, I don't know, there's just something very profound in the way that he discusses it - little insights here and there that are just, for lack of a better word, very MEANINGUL.

For example, he says, of parents and teachers who scold their children, to keep their undesirable 'creativeness' under wraps: "... when these children grow up, and perhaps crack up, then they'll find themselves in therapy groups where they'll be encouraged to say all the things that the teacher would have forbidden during school." SO TRUE. This is what all the group therapies in Psych hospitals do - try to bring back the creativeness of the child. Why do we limit it in the first place??

Basically he stresses that EVERYONE has "weird" thoughts and an "artistic" nature that many of us have learned to say NO to, because they are forbidden or at least not encouraged. He says, "In one moment I knew that the valuing of men by their intelligence is crazy, that the peasants watching the night sky might feel more than I feel, that the man who dances might be superior to myself - word-bound and unable to dance. From then on I noticed how warped many people of great intelligence are, and I began to value people for their actions, rather than their thoughts."

And that's not EVEN getting into the last chapter, on MASKS - at first I was thinking, "OK, this is weird, why is there a huge chapter on MASKS in a book about IMPROV"? But the things he describes there are perhaps the most amazing, and disturbing, of the whole book. It almost makes me fear what I would "do" if I were to follow his instructions and suggestions ... but it's an excited sort of 'fear' - actually I wish I had readier access to instructors who are comfortable in these methods ... well, I can't really describe it much better than that.

Get Dudley's Gear Handbook instead

A lot of this is "photo-copied" (quality less than stellar) from the Gear Handbook (also by Dudley). Most everything you need is there, the line drawings are acceptable, but image quality on many figures is awful. Consider getting a used copy of the Gear Handbook (First Edition, 1962 by Dudley; Second Edition, ~1990s by Townsend) instead of this book.

Excellent book, bad print quality.

Excellent book, very well written with deep knowledge - just the right one for engineers in their everyday work related to gears and gear design. Unfortunately, not good printing quality, pictures are plain bad. Don't get me wrong, you can still read it OK, but it's highly irritating at some places, as one would expect higher quality print from such valuable volume. It's a shame for the publisher. I couldn't find the 1984 edition and had to buy this one. Still a very good book.

Excellant Book - But photos could be printed better

This is an excellant book. I have an earlier version from the 1950's and both are invaluable resources at work. The text and line figures in the book are printed well, but the print quality of the photos is very marginal. I was surprized to see such poor quality in a brand new book. I think they are using the cheapest process available to make the book. However, it is still worth getting since the information is so well prepared and valuable for those who do gear design.

About the Author
Cutler J. Cleveland is the Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies at Boston University, where he also holds the position of Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment. Dr. Cleveland is Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Energy (Elsevier Science, 2004), winner of an American Library Association award, Editor-in-Chief of the Dictionary of Energy (Elsevier Science, in press) and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Ecological Economics. Dr. Cleveland is a member of the American Statistical Association’s Committee on Energy Statistics, an advisory group to the Department of Energy, and a participant in the Stanford Energy Modeling Forum. He has been a consultant to numerous private and public organizations, including the Asian Development Bank, Charles River Associates, the Technical Research Centre of Finland, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the MacArthur Foundation have supported his research. Dr. Cleveland’s research focuses on the ecological-economic analysis of how energy and materials are used to meet human needs. His research employs the use of econometric models of oil supply, natural resource scarcity, and the relation between the use of energy and natural resources and economic systems. Dr. Cleveland publishes in journals such as Nature, Science, Ecological Modeling, Energy, The Energy Journal, The Annual Review of Energy, Resource and Energy Economics, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, and Ecological Economics. He has won publication awards from the International Association of Energy Economics and the National Wildlife Federation.

Christopher Morris is owner of Morris Books and a professional lexicographer who has edited more than 20 different dictionaries on a wide variety of subjects. He is editor in chief of the award-winning Academic Press Dictionary of Science and Technology, which provides the largest vocabulary of science yet compiled and features special essays by 120 eminent scientists, including nine Nobel laureates. He served as chief editor of the Macmillan school dictionary series, which includes several of the largest-selling educational dictionaries in U.S. history. He has also been an author of school and college textbooks and has compiled many different scientific glossaries, for fields such as ecology, endocrinology, microbiology, oncology, reproductive biology, and toxicology. He and Cutler Cleveland previously collaborated on the Encyclopedia of Energy, winner of an American Library Association award, for which Dr. Cleveland was editor in chief and he served as chief development editor.

K-Gr 3-An insomniac rooster crows up the moon so it won't be so dark. Each night the moon gets bigger, the hens are impressed, and he's convinced that the shoes, pots and pans, and clocks the people throw at him are gifts of appreciation. When the full moon rises, folks at an all-night dance vow to put the rooster in a stew pot so they can get some sleep. His confidence shaken, he flees to a tree where he thinks for a week while the moon wanes from lack of attention. But then, with the help of his rooster friends, now every night they crow the moon up on schedule (except for once a month when they rest) because "-if not for a noisy rooster, who will cockadoodle do it?" Halsey's pastiche of collage illustrations overlaid with paint resembles folk-art poultry on black backgrounds. Chicken's names, labels, asides, and comments are hand lettered in gray print and won't show well to groups but are viewable close-up. Tinted cutouts from antique sources decorate some pages, as well. The humorous, tongue-in-cheek tone of the telling and the original song at the end that encourages audiences to help sing the story make this a strong entry for storytimes.

This series keeps me clamoring for more.

While this was not my favorite of the series so far - if you love high school drama with a few zombies thrown in - this series is for you. Megan Berry is up to her old tricks of doing things her way; Ethan is driving her (and this reader) NUTS!!; Monicster keeps getting in the way. We will have to wait until Book 4 to find out what is going to happen at Homecoming. Who knows?!?

Must read if you heart zombies

Well that low down dirty Monica.....I am hooked to this story and can't put it down. I am gonna not be very happy with Ethan if he is involved with this mess....lol. I hope Meg gets to the bottom of this and fast and I can't wait to find out what is going on. Love this series so far it's a must read!!
