My favorite Bird Guide book for Southern Africa

I travel to southern Africa at least once a year on safari. I have found the Sasol guide book to be my favorite, and I use it extensively -- and I also own Newman's and Roberts (both good choices), as well as three other bird guide books for the region. If you have a little bit of birding experience, then this is an excellent book to consider. I may be wrong, but from personal experience, most southern African birders use either a copy of the Sasol, Newmans or Roberts.

Kindle version unfriendly

Would never have purchased the kindle version if I knew it was so user unfriendly. Why are there no links from the bird name to the appropriate page? Even if you know exactly what you are looking for, it takes forever to find the information. It is day lite robbery to sell the kindle version, I'll stick to my printed version.

Very pleased with ease

My family and I purchased this book for a trip to South Africa and Zambia last summer. We found it invaluable. Every day, whether on safari, walking through town, or driving along the highway we needed it to identify the most wonderful species of birds. The illustrations and organization were helpful, along with the photo index inside the cover. Our Zulu tour guide on Safari had one as well and said it was the only serious one to use. In this delightful book, Lazzaro presents a solid discussion of gardens that have been cultivated for over 500 years. In the first six chapters she covers the idea of the garden and its physical and philosophical representation, including reconstruction based on renderings, ornamentation such as stone sculpture, structured designs, natural design, and the synthesis between art and nature. The final four chapters are devoted to individual gardens and cover the Castello, the Boboli, the Villa D'Este, and the Lante Bagnaia. Those who have traveled to Italy will appreciate most the photographs by Lieberman, which reveal the geometry of the plantings and the symmetry of their arrangement in 190 black-and-white illustrations and 80 color plates. This well-planned book will serve the scholar of Renaissance culture as well as the home gardener looking for ideas. Highly recommended.

Stunning and

"Gardens in Italy in the late 15th and 16th centuries are presented in the context of contemporary ideas of nature and the interactions of human culture with the natural world."

Thus, what we have here is a book that celebrates the aesthetic beauty of some of the greatest "natural" spaces ever created while providing substantial and fascinating perspectives on what nature meant to Italians in the beginning of modernity. Lazarro explains with great detail how Renaissance gardens were formed in order to celebrate nature as both ordered and wild: the plants selected, the arrangement of the plants, the use of ornament, the role of architecture, and many of the design triumphs in topiary, grottoes, and even labyrinths. She also discusses the differences between geometric gardens (highly organized, not for the common folk) with public spaces of parks, while tying in the architecture, sculpture and fountains of central Italy. This is an enormous accomplishment.

This is a book of great beauty.

About the Author
Francesco M. Angelici, PhD, currently works in the areas of: Biology, behavioral ecology, fauna, zoogeography, and mammal systematic and conservation studies, particularly concerning carnivores, lagomorphs and ungulates. His other fields of research are: ornithology (the biology and ecology of Falconiformes, Passeriformes and Strigiformes) and herpetology (the ecology of snakes and their trophic relationship with mammals). He studies Italian and tropical fauna, with particular reference to the conservation of vertebrates. He also works in the areas of planning and environmental conservation. In particular, he has worked in the area of wildlife management at national parks, reserves and other protected areas in Italy and abroad. He currently works as a zoologist conservationist, with hunting management agencies. He is also a specialist in African savannah environments as well as desert and tropical rain forests.
