Please Enjoy Your Happiness: A Memoir, by Paul Brinkley-Rogers

A beautiful and evocative memoir based on the author’s summer-long love affair with a remarkable older Japanese woman in the wake of World War II—“the most romantic memoir you’re likely to read in a lifetime” (New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand).

Pulitzer Prize–winning war correspondent Paul Brinkley‑Rogers has lived an adventurous life all over the world. But there is one story he cannot forget: that of his haunting love affair with a mysterious older Japanese woman in 1959. Paul was a sailor aboard the USS Shangri‑La that long‑ago summer when he met Kaji Yukiko in the seaport of Yokosuka. A fierce intellectual, Yukiko shared her astonishing knowledge of literature, film, and poetry with Paul and encouraged, even demanded, that he use his gifts to become the writer he is today.

But theirs was not a quiet love story. When a member of the yakuza, Japan’s brutal crime syndicate, attempted to kidnap Yukiko, Paul realized that there was much more to her—and to Japan in the devastating wake of World War II—than he saw at first glance. Through the searing letters that Yukiko wrote to him and Paul’s vivid telling of a history made all the more powerful and poignant by the weight of time, Please Enjoy Your Happiness reaches across decades and continents, inviting us all to revisit those loves of our lives that never truly end.

Sixty years later - a British man's achingly romantic international memoir about an older woman - who may still be among us.
By David Kusumoto
* Between 1947 and 1959 - 31,080 Japanese women became "war brides" of American servicemen. "Please Enjoy Your Happiness," a title which refers to the awkward use of English on a sign posted outside of a watering hole in Yokosuka, Japan - may or may not be a book about one of these women. And this is just ONE of this memoir's many tantalizing mysteries. The cover art on the U.S. edition suggests an old school story. But what's inside is actually a tale of people caught in transition - as Japan speeds toward modernity in 1959.

* Despite Paul Brinkley-Rogers's Pulitzer-Prize winning credentials, my expectations were low. What more could be gleaned about a serviceman's romance with an Asian woman overseas? I worried about clichés associated with such pairings in popular books and films, which peaked during the 1950s and 1960s.

* But the 31-year-old Japanese woman who becomes the object of Mr. Brinkley-Rogers's affections - doesn't fit the aforementioned stereotypes. She's not looking for a man. She's described as being unusually tall and fair with a stunningly beautiful face, in one scene wearing a dark red beret with matching lipstick, a trench coat buttoned to her neck with a belt cinched tightly around her waist. Most odd of all - she has a mind of intense sophistication and intellect - soaked with the history of classical art, music and literature, e.g., Debussy, Beethoven, Kafka, Sartre, Kerouac and jazz. Yet she's an outcast because of her complicated genealogy and a dark past which includes ties to organized crime.

* Others have already outlined what this memoir is about. It is indeed one long love letter - broken up by chapters - and interspersed with real letters that this beguiling woman wrote to Mr. Brinkley-Rogers - during and shortly after their intense but platonic romance over a period of five months in 1959 - when he was a 19-year-old British "would-be" writer in the U.S. Navy. In this book, however, he is a man in his mid-70s - writing and reminiscing to a woman who would be in her mid-80s today.

* The motor that kept this book going for me is its beautiful prose, e.g., achingly written lines of exquisite romantic expression, sentences so fused with intense emotion that they capture the impossible - feelings of love so familiar - but so difficult to render on the printed page in contemporary language. He loves her, but does she love him back?

--------------
* A few of the MANY passages I liked:

"I put (your) letter back in the envelope and wondered. I laid the envelope on my chest. After a couple of minutes I realized I had placed it on my heart. I could see the envelope moving slightly with each heartbeat and with each breath. I felt as if I was drifting, effortlessly, in the night breeze for destinations unknown. I have lived a long time now, but I have never had that feeling again."

"Age is stripping away what remains of my youth with a cruelty that no young person, even my children, can understand...I am sometimes astonished when I wake up in the morning and discover that I am still alive. I am pretty sure this happens to you too because so many of my friends of a similar age say they experience this same shock."

"I asked (you), 'When we are old, will we also be young when we think about each other?’ And you said, ‘That is a very strange question. Do you mean when we think about each other, will we see each other the way we are now? We will have to see if the life you live - allows you to be forever young."

"You said to me, 'A certain woman is in love with a certain man, but he does not know it. Do you know that woman?' I nodded yes. 'In my country,' you said, 'this is the perfect formula for a love affair that will have a beginning and an end. I have always wanted to be in love with a man who did not know I loved him. How bittersweet...how unforgettable. A love I can take with me until I die. Do you understand?"

"She writes, 'We are like a man and a woman (who are) bound together by love and charity. We are from opposite ends of the world, but we will be together for eternity - even in this existence where love affairs amount to nothing more than frost on the ground in late spring.'"

The author writes that the 2013 Italian art house film, "La Grande Bellezza - The Great Beauty" - feels like his life. In the movie, an elderly journalist knows that the only woman he has ever loved - had left him decades ago without an explanation. As he celebrates his 65th birthday with reckless decadence, he suddenly learns the woman from his youth has died. The woman's grieving husband, who he has never met, comes to tell him he had just read her private journals. She wrote, the husband tells him, that the journalist – as a seventeen-year-old boy she knew when she was nineteen - who she had never kissed – was the only man she had ever loved...(As he hears this, he notices that) "all around him are friends and acquaintances whose lives are in disarray - and whose loves - and their urge to live - are coming to an end. He thinks back to when he was seventeen and innocent, and his world is knocked off its axis."
--------------

* In sum, I think many people idealize the "first love" of their lives - because everything "back then" - feels newly minted, innocent and untethered by adult baggage. It's obvious Mr. Brinkley-Rogers feels the same. But he makes a good case for himself, citing other works of art and literature which beautifully and heartbreakingly - mirror his state of mind - as he examines what he declares was the purest romantic relationship of his life. Everything this woman predicted about the course of his life and career - came true. Does he find her? His efforts and his answers are deeply poignant. In my view, the way he chooses to end his tale is tonally perfect - which in turn makes "Please Enjoy Your Happiness" - for my money, the most romantic memoir of the year.

Unique Autobiography
By DA
This book is different from anything you have read, and I enjoyed it enough to recommend to my book club for next year. I'm confident they will enjoy it as well. It's an autobiographical story about a young sailor who is befriended by an older Japanese woman while on shore leave in Japan. They meet repeatedly to discuss art, music, literature -- and he doesn't realize until later in life that he really did love her. I won't reveal the results of his search for her 40 years later...you'll have to read it!

Not the way I want to remember past Happy events
By Marian S. Weinberg
I found it a bit dull and slow moving at times. The story is interesting, and aparently made a huge mark on young man, which he carried through
his life. Apparently he married and had two sons, each of which he mentioned just once! Never a word about his wife, or
how this moving Japanese encounter influenced his subsequent family life. Apparently he could not tuck it away as a beautiful 'growing up' experience. I was disappointed.

Fa-Hwa 2nd edition
By Lloyd J Feldmann
I have used the first edition and was generally pleased. The second edition, however, is unacceptable. The rewrite added a few interesting and a few less useful topics. The problems at the end of each section were changed but the answer key referred, in many cases, to the the first edition. Sometimes the solutions were large deviations from the stated problem. There were occasional proof reading errors, far too many for a major text. The students were frequently frustrated in their efforts to justify the answer to the problem as stated.

Good choice for community college work
By the Professor
I have taught using this text for 10 years at our local community college in an engineering technology program. It is written clearly and concisely with excellent examples for all major concepts. The tables and appendices are easy to understand. The answer key text clearly show the solutions and is also good for exams. The book covers both semesters material for statics and strength of materials so a second text book is not required. This text is algebra based and is appropriate for those students needing an introduction. Serious students seeking higher level engineering education should select a calculus based text instead. Being a professional engineer as well as an adjunct faculty is a plus for teaching these classes. Unless you are an engineer you may be at a handicap if you attempt to teach this subject.

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up--This book takes a thematic and then chronological approach to its subject. The philosophers are first grouped by their school of thought, clearly outlined on the contents page. Within each division, Stokes includes several examples, showing the progression of that philosophy over time. For example, existentialism is traced from Kierkegaard through Heidegger and Sartre to de Beauvoir. Each entry is two pages long, and includes a black-and-white illustration or photo of the philosopher. No biographical information is included beyond a general comment about nationality or education. Instead, readers are given a summary of each individual's contribution to the "science" of philosophy. There are cross-references throughout, indicated by boldface type. The glossary seeks to clarify some of the more difficult terms and concepts. This is not a work for beginners; both the vocabulary and content make it appropriate for more mature readers. Overall, however, it is a valuable introduction to some of the world's great thinkers.--Elizabeth M. Reardon, McCallie School, Chattanooga, TN

like the mainstream
By Jahan Khamsehzadeh
I found Philip Stokes' Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers to be a real gem—the writing is clear, the content substantial, and the organization precise. Serving as a brief overview of Western philosophy, Stokes' work captures meaningful snapshots of a 100 different philosophers in 382 pages—designating about three pages to each thinker. Divided into 22 sections, Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers categorizes each philosopher by camps (the Presocratics, the Eleatics, the Academics, the Atomists, the Cynics, the Stoics, the Sceptics, the Neoplatonists, the Christians, the Scholastics, the Age of Science, the Rationalists, the Empiricists, the Idealists, the Liberals, the Evolutionists, the Pragmatists, the Materialists, the Existentialists, the Linguistic Turn, the Postmodernists, and the New Scientists). Since a three page presentation can only serve as an introduction to a person's work, Stoke's makes every sentence count. He introduces and explains their major ideas, along with the context they lived in, who they were influenced by, and in turn who they later influenced.

An important reason I chose this book is "the Linguistic Turn". In this section, capturing philosophers from the 20th century, Stokes describes thirteen philosophers—by for more than any other category. "The Linguistic Turn" describes present day, mainstream academic philosophy in America—an area of philosophy I am unfamiliar with for several reason, mostly because I have full-heartedly followed a lineage of philosophy, which we can call "Integral" or "Holistic", that has rarely entered mainstream academics. I find leaving out this lineage of integral philosophy—including thinkers such de Chardin, Grof, Wilber, Laszlo, Sheldrake, etc— to be a short-coming of the book; after Hegel, it doesn't include any of these thinkers, except for the surprising inclusions of both Bergson and Whitehead. All these integral thinkers embraced a panpsychist perspective, a major element in my life, but not following this path is precisely why I chose this book, because, like the mainstream, it ended up following a different philosophical lineage than myself—one grounded in materialism and disembodied rationality.

I felt angry while reading "the Linguistic Turn", and becoming aware of the state of modern day philosophy. Up until the 20th century, what I saw reading the book was the unfolding of Western philosophy, moving from thinker to thinker—a beautiful story taken in about 80 different snapshots, each person bringing in the richness of different ideas—until we get to the logic and linguistics after Existentialism—then it all gets stale. Before this point, whether or not I agreed with each thinker of the more than 2,500 year movement, each passionately made metaphysical and social statements and authentically tried to understand themselves, the universe, and humanity—many making deeply meaningful contribution to knowledge and society. In comparison, 20th century philosophy—reduced to nothing more than meaning in language—seems like a massive detour; and arguably made no significant contribution to our culture. I had an impression of the absurdity philosophy has been reduced to in higher education, but now I know; I feel thoroughly disappointed. I am shocked what Western society has done to what I consider the most beautiful human discipline—we need to resuscitate what once was the greatest container for human knowledge and wisdom.

That being said, by summarizing different pivotal thinkers that have influenced much of what we know, this book has much to offer. I believe this book is a must read for every philosopher—not because it brings an over-arching philosophical perspective like Passion of the Western Mind, or other books presenting a story of philosophy, but because it serves as a great companion to such books—since the writer delivers no philosophical perspective of his own, but simply gives a Wikipedia like description of each thinker. I have come to see that Western philosophy, as a discipline, carries a story—and includes its own myths, like that of Socrates and Galileo—and this book serves to deepen one's understanding of the characters in the play. For a long time I have wanted greater familiarity with the players we see in philosophical works, and reading a book on each person takes too long; Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers helps fill in some of the cracks. The only off-putting quality of the book is its large 14 size font; it makes the book seem less serious—though I am sure it was done to make the book look user friendly and accessible to the lay person. Still, the book definitely does not lack in content. Overall, it is an enjoyable read and serves as a great introduction to 100 lives—including biographical content, great works, and original ideas—that made major intellectual contributions in the evolution of Western society.

Great Price for a Decent Reference E-Book:
By Paul
I am reviewing the Kindle edition of this book which currently sells for less than the price of a cup of coffee. Price alone wouldn't warrant a positive review (there's plenty of junk on sale for a dollar), but happily this is a serviceable little book for neophytes and philosophy students alike. The book has an active table of contents and is fully searchable with hyperlinks laced generously through the text referring to earlier and later chapters, as well as footnotes.

The 100 philosophers are chosen judiciously (partisans can quarrel about glaring omissions and dubious inclusions, but in general choices are non-controversial) and presented more or less in chronological order. More or less, I say, because the author has thought to present the individual philosophers under general headings, so occasionally chronology bows down to conceptual structure. The headings include, for example The Presocratics; The Eleatics: The Academics; The Atomists; The Cynics; Stoics; The Skeptics; Neoplatonists ; Scholastics etc. until we reach The Existentialists; The linguistic Turn; The Postmodernists and The New Scientists (Godel, Turing, Kuhn, Quine et al.) Though these spoonfuls on each philosopher are very broad overviews, they are surprisingly useful as either quick references or refreshers.

Most pleasing for me was the generous links from chapter to chapter. Let's say you are reading "Derrida" and see a reference to linguist Saussure or anthropologist Levi-Strauss. No need for wikipedia if you don't know them or grasp the reference. Just click on the names ("Saussure") and voila, your back to the chapter about him. I had fun bouncing around, and seeing these connections, particularly for authors I hadn't read for some time.
As someone in the field of philosophy, I view this as one of several handy reference books in my kindle Fire. I wouldn't read it cover to cover, but from what I have read, there are no egregious errors that I noticed, so curious readers, 1st or 2nd year undergrads and even the more advanced can shell out the 99 cents with--I would bet-- no fear of buyer's remorse. A handy little e-book.

Very ESSENTIAL indeed
By Herman Espinal
A review of 100 essential thinkers of history, with mostly notable names, and some that are little known. There are other books are similar to this one in terms of a list of essential thinkers. I think that these 100 are essential to Stokes. These thinkers are categorized based on their philosophical views. Scientists, mathematicians, and logicians are also included. Stokes explains each essential thinker's philosophy, and adds his views on each subject as well as comparisons to other philosophers. A good literary work.

The Exile: An Outlander Graphic Novel, by Diana Gabaldon

Diana Gabaldon’s brilliant storytelling has captivated millions of readers in her bestselling and award-winning Outlander saga. Now, in her first-ever graphic novel, Gabaldon gives readers a fresh look at the events of the original Outlander: Jamie Fraser’s side of the story, gorgeously rendered by artist Hoang Nguyen.

After too long an absence, Jamie Fraser is coming home to Scotland—but not without great trepidation. Though his beloved godfather, Murtagh, promised Jamie’s late parents he’d watch over their brash son, making good on that vow will be no easy task. There’s already a fat bounty on the young exile’s head, courtesy of Captain Black Jack Randall, the sadistic British officer who’s crossed paths—and swords—with Jamie in the past. And in the court of the mighty MacKenzie clan, Jamie is a pawn in the power struggle between his uncles: aging chieftain Colum, who demands his nephew’s loyalty—or his life—and Dougal, war chieftain of Clan MacKenzie, who’d sooner see Jamie put to the sword than anointed Colum’s heir.

And then there is Claire Randall—mysterious, beautiful, and strong-willed, who appears in Jamie’s life to stir his  compassion . . . and arouse his desire.

But even as Jamie’s heart draws him to Claire, Murtagh is certain she’s been sent by the Old Ones, and Captain Randall accuses her of being a spy. Claire clearly has something to hide, though Jamie can’t believe she could pose him any danger. Still, he knows she is torn between two choices—a life with him, and whatever it is that draws her thoughts so often elsewhere.

Step into the captivating, passionate, and suspenseful world of The Exile, and experience the storytelling magic of Diana Gabaldon as never before.

It's not TERRIBLE, but...
By Stephanie E.
It's really not that great either. Yes, I did pre-order this graphic novel, and yes, I am a fan of the Outlander series.

I prompt you, however, not to read the bad reviews (despite the fact that there are many) until you read this review.

As someone who has a great appreciation of literature and art as well, I own a vast array of novels and graphic novels. I won't consider myself an expert by any means, but I think I have a decent working knowledge of where the two differ. I agree with most reviewers that this might be blasphemy for hardcore Gabaldon fans. I am not a hardcore fan, and I decided to take Diana's endeavor with a grain of salt. She was certainly trying something new and regardless of what it was, fans were going to buy it (and they still will, more than likely).

To be honest, most of what I loved as a reader about Outlander got lost in the translation from novel to graphic novel. Unlike some, however, I feel that this was not because of the artist, but because of Diana Gabaldon's writing style: she writes in first person. It makes it a little difficult to translate that to graphic form, especially when you are taking it from someone that is outside of the relationship that is the core of her series. I felt that this was the main problem. Had the story been told from Jamie's point of view and not Murtagh's...well, I'm not saying that would have made it leaps and bounds better, but it might have helped a little.

That being said, I enjoyed the graphic novel a lot. It was light, not too heavy, did have a lot of nudity, which knowing the Gabaldon, should come as no surprise to readers. I thought the art was gorgeous; the illustrator really did a great job. I personally enjoyed the rough edge that the pictures had to them. It was not clean or polished with hard lines. It was light, airy and it went really well with the story. The art was the best part for me personally.

Do I think this was a waste of time? No. I spent a good two hours blowing through it on Tuesday night when I could have been writing a paper and I think it was worth it. I enjoyed myself and it was fun. Not earth shattering, but just fun. I think that this will be fun for you as a fan and as a reader if you allow it to be. I suggest you try not to get caught up in what your expectations of Gabaldon are, because she is not going to live up to them with this graphic novel. This is not her new 800-page novel. This is a 200-300 page graphic novel with no sweeping hills or grand descriptions of scenery or anything else.
Take it for what it actually is and not what you were wanting it to be. You will be a lot happier with the results if you just let it happen and try to have fun with it.

Would I recommend this? Sure! I already have. My mother and my older sister, and probably my aunt will all read it while on vacation in Key West. I told them it would be great to read for the plane or while sitting in the airport.

I hope that is review helps you make the decision whether or not to purchase. I think if you are looking for a Gabaldon novel, stay away from this. You will probably be disappointed and displeased with the artist's depictions of Jamie and Claire. If you want a fun, light, easy read that give you some insight to the other characters, then buy it. Like I said, not great, but I am happy that my money went to something I enjoyed and that others will enjoy as well.

I hope, I'll repost and let you know if everyone in my family hated it (I doubt they will).

UPDATE:

I'm surprised to be the top review! My older sister read this, and she, like many of you, weren't fans! She said that she put it down halfway through. I still have the book on my shelf and enjoy it from time to time.

Not in love, but not disappointed either...
By T. Scot
The storyline in this graphic novel ("comic book" to some people) is interesting, and adds new elements previously unheard of in the Outlander series (a new character and Murtaugh-focused sub-plot). However, it's also a little choppy and disjointed.

The illustrations are beautiful and sometimes spot-on. They are, conversely, also sometimes very far off if you're familiar with the details of the series. For example, Jamie is clearly in the 5'10" area in this book, and never appears "a head above" the other men. Additionally, it's very hard to follow which man is which, as they are all portrayed almost identically.

Having said that, though, I do think it's worth reading, and as a die-hard fan, I believe it's worth owning.

One last note: Please don't review with one star just because you didn't know what a graphic novel was. That's not fair to the author or artist.

It's a graphic novel, folks!
By Ms Winston
While I was not terribly familiar with graphic novels, I loved comic books well into my teens, and looked forward to The Exile. I, for one, am not disappointed. Given the constraints of the format I thought it was enjoyable -- and I loved the way Jamie and Claire were depicted by the artist. Someone wrote that Jamie looked too young and naive, seeming to forget that he was only 22 and still a virgin when he married Claire. I do agree that in some of the panels his looks changed somewhat, but usually due , IMO, to the artist attempting to convey emotion. Real people do not look the same all the time -- sometimes we look great and other times pretty darn unattractive (and I have the pictures to prove it!). The beautiful images of Claire succeeded in wiping away that horrible illustation that appeared on the cover of the first mass market edition to be released in the U.S. back in the early 90s -- the one where Claire looked like a middle aged washerwoman.

Now to the negatives: I agree that the color of Jamie's eyes didn't seem quite right, they looked too dark (Gabaldon wrote that his eyes were dark blue, but in the book they looked almost black); and the story of Kenneth was unnecessary and confusing. One of the problems with a graphic novel is that wonderful pieces of discriptive passages, with which Outlander abounds, are eliminated by the format. But I feel that Hoang Nguyen's beautiful illustrations of Scotland in many ways compensated for the lack of narration. I would like to see more of this format.

Fascinating
By Harto
Having loved Tim Ferguson's prolific work over the years beginning with Doug Anthony All-Stars many years ago, I thought this could be an interesting read. It didn't let me down. Whilst I would love to be a TV comedy writer, I don't have delusions of grandeur. Maybe one day. It's a tough and competitive business. Whether you have ambitions of cracking the market or you're just a fan of comedy in general, this is a fantastic and fascinating read. It is both itself educational and amusing and I recommend it wholeheartedly. I have just finished it and am going to read it again.

Provides interesting insights to the nature of comedy.
By Ian Nicholson
Tim Ferguson. A lovely fella! Is he funny? Not always, and like all people that struggle in their profession, he's turned to teaching it instead. (Hey, I can talk, I teach short film-making!).

Tim has obviously spent a lot of time studying the art and science of comedy, and that's a good thing. He explains various comedic setups in principle and comments on their execution. There are many examples from popular comedy show/films to explain his points along the way, and the book is written in a relaxed, easy to read manner.

Is it worth the money? As I always say, with these kind of books, if I learn ONE thing that helps me improve what I am trying to do then it is worth it, and I have learned quite a few things from this book which will definitely help me with my next comedy screenplay. Yes. It IS worth the money.

Is it 100% perfect? No. (Sorry Tim!) But then nothing ever is perfect. Some of the exercises are not explained very well (although not difficult to work out) which is why, I suspect, another reviewer here got upset.

That's why I've given it four stars, but I HAVE added it to my 'Recommended Reading List' at the Sydney Short Film School. ([...]

Worth every penny.
By Len & Nia
I write romantic comedy and am always trying to figure out what makes stuff funny. Now I know. In some ways The Cheeky Monkey has ruined me for comedy, but loss of being able to be swept totally away by story is a hazard of being a writer anyway. It's actually a good thing when it happens. It means you're learning the ropes.

This book tells you the principles of comedy using contemporary as well as classical examples, all of which make you laugh.

Understanding the dynamics of comedy, the types of comedy, how situational TV comedy works, how to form a central idea for a work of comedy opens possibilities beyond where just gut instinct can take you. Exercises make the book an affordable Do it yourself course that strengthened my skills. I saw immediate improvement in my work in progress.
